Description

Wires of native silver on matrix from the Zmeinogorsk mining area. A rare historic specimen which comes with beautiful antique label dated 19th century. The label means: "haarförmig - gediegen Silber auf Hornstein - aus Kolywan" (hair-shaped - native silver on chert - from Kolywan).

In the course of the 18th century, the northern edge of the Altai Mountains and its entire northern foothills - large parts of today's Altai Region and Novosibirsk Oblast - were called Kolyvan Oblast, derived from Gornaya Kolyvan ("Mountain Kolyvan"), the name of the mining area around Zmeinogorsk and the present-day village of Kolyvan in Altai Region.
