Description

Here is a native silver specimen from a rare locality, the Elkhorn Mine, Elkhorn Mining District (Coolidge Mining District; Wise River Mining District), Beaverhead Co., Montana, USA: Crystalline, a bit arborescent grown silver is scattered between grey-white calcite.
The Elkhorn was one of the richest early silver mines in the NW. It produced around 6.5 million ounces silver, most of which before 1900. Continuous production ended in 1912, and the attempted resumption of production was never very profitable (cit. mindat).
This is excellent, old-time material from this historic mine and seldom available.

Comes with two antique labels, one from Alex Franz and one from the H.-L. Dabbert collection.
Hans-Leopold Dabbert was a geologist from Goslar in the Harz mountains in Germany. He was born in Osterwieck/Germany and died on June 8, 1966, in Goslar. His collection may have gone to a German institution, possibly the Technical University of Berlin in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Dated labels suggest that some specimens in the collection may have originally been found in the 1850s, and some may have been sold ca. 1944.
