Description

An old timer from before the Saltpeter War (Guerra del salitre) from 1879 to 1884, when Algodon Bay (today the shipping harbour for Chuquicamata copper, Tocopilla) still belonged to Bolivia. In a description by german naturalist Dr. Ernst Freiherr von Bibra from 1852 ("Die Algodon-Bay in Bolivien") the occurrence of atacamite in copper mines around the bay is mentioned: "Hin und wieder trifft man Kupferkies und ebenso eingesprengt Atakamit (salzsaures Kupfer) das ausserdem so seltene Erz, welches gegenwärtig, wie wir hören werden, in der Algodon-Bay bergmännisch abgebaut wird." Roughly translated: "Now and then one comes across chalcopyrite and also scattered atacamite (muriatic copper), that rare ore which, as we shall hear, is presently mined in Algodon Bay." The specimen features dark emerald green acicular atacamite crystals with whiteish halloysite(?) on matrix. A rare one! From the collection of Bergrat Dr. Ing. Carl William Anton Schiffner (1865-ca. 1950)
