Analcime With Gmelinite

Type Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Little Deerpark Quarry, Glenarm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Size Range:
Cabinet (10-18 cm)
Size:
13 × 9 × 9 cm
Description

Radiating analcime is very rare and occurs at the type locality for gmelinite but not usually in very close association. This is the first specimen I have ever collected with both species present in display quality. The radiating analcime is in a 2.3 x 2.2 cm vug along with normal analcime which has a green colour due to underlying saponite. The radiating crystals are up to 0.8 cm in length and display the refraction of light, into the colours of the spectrum along their length, that sometimes occurs at this location. I know of no other zeolite material that shows this habit. The gmelinite (TL) has a 5.5 x 1.5 coverage of crystals and there are numerous vugs containing balls of green/grey saponite. A very interesting specimen.
