Description

A very interesting specimen from the mid of the 19th century: massive hematite, in part botroidal and in part as specularite is accompanied by slightly smoky quartzes. The label gives S. Wales as locale but this is very probably a mistake. I got some advice from a specialized collector who agrees that this is most likely a cumbrian specimen.

An interesting detail of the specimen is the notice on the label: Dr. Ridgway, 1849.

The specimen is from the Dukes of MANTUA and MONTFERRAT collection - an Italian collection from the C18 th century. The Dukes collected systematic minerals from all over the world. In the mid C19th the collection came to England and was described as the collection of CHARLES OTTLEY GROOM-NAPIER, a distant relative of the Dukes. Mr. Groom-Napier recatalogued and created the new labels with the red M&M design.
