Description

An original ferromanganese nodule from the deep Pacific Ocean (Eastern Basin SO Hawai'i). The specimen was revovered from appr. 5000 m depth.
The piece shows some cracks, probably caused by water loss, but has been stable for years.

This manganese nodule has not been analyzed, but according to literature, todorokite and birnessite dominate virtually all such nodules tested. These minerals are intergrown with other poorly crystallized hydrous oxides of manganese and iron.
