Description

Evansite, a hydrous Al-phosphate, is a secondary amorphous mineral commonly occurring with limonite and allophane. Here is a fine specimen covered with crusts and globular structures of white evansite on all sides. The evansite shows intensive pearly luster.

The specimen features a sticker naming the locality "Sajo, Com. Gömös, Hungary". A 'comitat' (abbreviaton 'Com.') was an administrative unit in the austro-hungarian empire and still in modern hungary as well. The comitat "Gömör és Kis-Hont vármegye", slowakian "Gemersko-malohontská župa" was founded in 1802, it was located in the so-called 'Slowakian ore montains', between the present-day border between slovakia and hungary, the towns of Poltár and Rožňava and the lower Tatra mountains. 'Sajó' is the old hungarian name for Slaná river which flows through this area. The area was part of the austro-hungarian empire before WW I, belonged to Czechoslovakia for a short time after 1918, then again to hungary during WW II, and is now part of present-day Slovakia.
