New Cornwall Mine, Kadina, South Australia, Australia
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
5.9 × 3.6 × 2.5 cm
Description

This mine is renowned for producing the largest atacamite crystals in the world - reportedly up to 23cm long ! This specimen however contains malachite as dark green micro crystals coating the sides of a large open vugh in the matrix.

Collected on the dumps during a Mineralogical Society of South Australia field excursion. Strangely, malachite is quite a rare secondary mineral in the Wallaroo / Moonta mining district.
