Sipi Caves, Mount Elgon, Manafwa District, Eastern Region, Uganda
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6 × 5 × 1.7 cm
Description

Petrified wood, replaced by natrolite, a split, somewhat flattened branch, the hollow form filled with very good, acicular, snow-white natrolite crystals growing inwards.

Very rare material, brought to Europe from a scientific excursion a few years ago. Last described by Udluft (1929) and Holms (British Museum 1937). It’s the only fossil material replaced by natrolite that I’ve ever heard of.

Usually it’s strictly forbidden to take anything out of the Mount Elgon area, because it’s a nature reserve.
