Mitsinjo, Boeny, Madagascar
Size Range:
Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3.3 × 2.5 × 1 cm
Description

Very nice 'opalized' ammonite with strong red color and really nice yellow and green flashes. All sides very good.
Ammolite is a pseudomorph of aragonite after biogenic aragonite (the ammonite shell) and can include quartz and calcite plus many elements like iron, magnesian, copper, chrome, aluminium, strontium, titan and more in micro traces. There is no water in ammolite (like in real opal), the color and iridescence caused by interference in the micro layers of the material. In daylight this 'ammolite (also calcentin or korite) ammonite' shines very brightly in cherry to wine-red with traces of green and golden yellow. Almost all parts of the shell seem to radiate with color, much more and better than the camera can show. This is an outstanding specimen of high quality.
