Description

In 1987, a sensational crystal cave was discovered in the area of Grimsel in the Swiss Alps. Two local Strahler found one of the largest and in terms of quality of the crystals, one of the absolutely best Alpine clefts to be known to date, revealing world class rock crystals and light smoky quartz clusters and matrix specimens. What is so unique about this cleft is that it was actually a marmot burrow. Some of the specimens which were found in the first nine meters of the cleft show partially scratches at the faces.. this was not caused during excavating of the crystals, this was actually caused by the animals that lived in there, leaving permanent and unique impressions in form of little scratches, caused by loose rocks around. The whole found was split. One of them decided to renovate his own home in the village of Obergesteln in Goms to a public museum and now half of this amazing find can be seen there. The other one released a part of his specimens for sale so I had the rare chance to acquire 4 pieces. This particular example I am offerimg here stands for highest quality possible in terms of lustre, crystal habitus, clearness and visual effect of the crystals. The main crystal measures 10.5 cm and is just as clear as a piece of glass. The crystal beside is beautifully leaning towards the main one. Both crystals are perfectly positioned on a flat piece of mother rock and both of the crystals show re-healed tips. There is no damage to any spot of the crystals, all contact spots are re crystallised. A true Alpine masterpiece. Some Swiss Strahler and mineral enthusiasts even say that the crystals of this cleft belong to the very very best of all time found in the Swiss Alps.
