Two new minerals for the Uranus mine, Annaberg-Buchholz, Germany

The unique mineralogy of Jachymov mining district in the Czech Republic is known for many years and many new - especially uranium bearing minerals - could be described with the help of modern analytical methods. Recent analytical work has shown that many of these unique minerals, eg. paddlewheelite & albrechtschraufite were formed in the Uranus mine too. It is not a real suprise that these minerals could arise as the mining districts have a distance of ~30km to each other and the geological setting is comparable. Apart from the interesting U bearing phases the element Mg also plays an important role in the formation of secondary minerals. Other unusual minerals with Mg as a major element so far found are: Leonardsenite, chudobaite & sellaite.

Now we will add two more interesting minerals two the list:

Chongite

Chongite has been SC-XRD, SEM-EDS & Raman confirmed and occurs as tiny colourless to pale pink groups with a typical surface striation in the arsenate paragenesis. The analytical data can be viewed on mindat.

Šlikite

SEM-EDS & PXRD confirmed Šlikite associated with rhodochrosite from the Uranus mine, Germany. Šlikite appears as colourless and brown spheres and aggregates. The brown tint is a consequence of Mn oxidation. Mn was always observed in standardless SEM-EDS analysis. Analytical data can be found on mindat
