Bavenite & Bazzite

Rare Mineral

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Heftetjern Pegmatite, Tørdal, Drangedal, Vestfold og Telemark, Norway
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
5 × 4 × 3.5 cm
Description

A 2.7 cm zone with an aggregate of numerous creamy-white, mostly fibrous bavenite crystals (XRD confirmed) is embedded in quartz.

In addition a sky-blue bazzite crystal, 0.4 cm in size, is located at the edge of the specimen. It is crossed by a small bavenite? crystal. At Heftetjern bazzite occurs as an accessory mineral within a cleavelandite-amazonite pegmatite. This locality is among the richest known occurences in the world for bazzite (also here it is occuring very rarely, however). Studies on different crystals showed a content of ca. 14.5 % of Sc2O3 and almost 3 weight % of Cs2O, Juve & Bergstøl, 1990). Therefore it is a caesian bazzite.

Specimen collected in 1995.
